If You’re Diabetic, Will You Die Sooner If You Don’t Exercise?
All these reports show good results with exercise as it relates to both diabetes and heart health. But what about mortality? Does exercise really help determine if you’re going to die before you should, even if you have diabetes? That’s a good question, and you’re about to read the answer.
In a study published in the journal Diabetes Care, 2,196 diabetic men were followed for an average of over fourteen years. They were placed into one of three groups, according to how much they exercised. They found the risk of mortality was inversely related to fitness in a steep gradient between degrees of exercise performed. The better physical condition, the lower the mortality rate. The study concluded that the ones who exercised the least had a greater than five times higher risk of death than those who exercised the most.
Another article in the Archives of Internal Medicine makes it even plainer. The study it discussed noted a significantly higher risk of heart attack if a person is diabetic than if not.
This article stressed that physical activity is the cornerstone of managing diabetes. Researchers based this on the fact that persons with diabetes are at higher risk for disease of the arteries of their heart and brain and are subject to premature death. The study recommended at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, with walking being of particular interest because it requires no specific facilities and can be easily performed in a daily routine and is relatively safe. The study concludes, “Physical activity relates to a thirty-three percent lower risk of overall mortality and a thirty-five percent lower risk of heart mortality compared with inactivity.”
You don’t have to be a doctor to understand the reward of exercise if you’re diabetic. And remember, we’re not just talking about how long you will live but also about quality of life. Living longer isn’t rewarding if your quality of life is greatly impaired. Think of your new lifestyle changes in terms of not only getting to live longer but also living life with more quality.
